Every enterprise considering AI agents faces the same strategic question: how do we get from “this sounds promising” to “this is running in production”? There are three paths. Each has real trade-offs, and the right choice depends on where you are, not where you wish you were.
Option 1: Build in-house

When it makes sense: You have a strong ML engineering team, your use case is core to your competitive advantage, and you’re willing to invest in building and maintaining the full stack over years, not months.
Option 2: Buy a platform
You adopt an agent platform — one of the growing number of SaaS products that provide a framework, hosting, and tooling for building and deploying agents.
What you get:
- Faster time to first deployment
- Pre-built integrations, UI components, and monitoring dashboards
- The vendor handles infrastructure and some operational concerns
- A community and ecosystem around the platform
What it costs:
- You’re constrained by the platform’s abstractions. If the platform doesn’t support your integration pattern, you work around it or wait for a feature request
- Customization has limits. Enterprise workflows are messy, and platforms are built for the common case
- You still need engineers to build, test, and maintain your agents on the platform
- Vendor lock-in becomes a real factor once you’ve built significant logic on their abstractions
- Pricing models can become expensive at scale, especially when they charge per agent execution or per token
When it makes sense: You want to move fast, your use cases fit the platform’s model well, and you have engineers who can work within the platform’s constraints.
Option 3: Managed service
You work with a provider that builds, deploys, and operates agents on your behalf. You define the outcomes you need. The provider handles architecture, implementation, deployment, monitoring, and ongoing optimization.
What you get:
- Production agents without building or maintaining the underlying stack
- Access to practitioners who have already solved the hard problems: guardrails, observability, failure recovery, prompt engineering at scale
- Outcome-based accountability — the provider is on the hook for the agent working, not just for giving you tools to build one
- Faster iteration, because the team operating your agents does this full-time
- Your internal teams stay focused on your core product
What it costs:
- Less direct control over implementation details
- Dependency on the provider’s expertise and availability
- You need trust and clear SLAs, because someone else is operating systems that touch your data and workflows
- Communication overhead — the provider needs to deeply understand your domain
For enterprises in regulated industries, there’s an additional advantage: a managed provider that operates on sovereign infrastructure can handle regulatory compliance and data residency as part of the service. You don’t have to become an expert in privacy regulations on top of everything else — the provider already is.
When it makes sense: You want agents in production but don’t want to build and staff an internal AI platform team. Your use cases are important but not so unique that only your team could build them. You’d rather pay for outcomes than for infrastructure.
How to decide
Start with two questions:
Is this a core competitive differentiator? If your AI agents are the product — if agent capability is what you sell — build in-house. You need the control and the IP.
Do you have the team? Building production agents requires a specific combination of ML, systems engineering, and operational expertise. If you don’t have that team today, and you need results in quarters rather than years, building from scratch is a slow path.
For most enterprises, the honest answer is: agents are a capability that supports your business, not the business itself. You need them to work reliably, integrate with your existing systems, and improve over time. You don’t need to invent the underlying technology.

There’s no single right answer. But there is a wrong one: assuming you need to build everything yourself just because you can.
